What is this all about?

Who am I and what is this blog all about? Me, I’m just a regular guy who happens to be a proud American and also a proud Puerto Rican; born and raised in New York, visiting the island of Puerto Rico many times throughout my life. As many who grew up like me, I have given much thought to the issues of Puerto Rico and what it means to be Puerto Rican. Arguably, the single most important issue surrounding Puerto Rico is it’s unique political status and association with the United States. Recently, Puerto Rico has been on the news, because of it’s own financial crisis, while some attention has been given to how the commonwealth status has presented specific challenges in trying to achieve long term recovery, the status issue runs much deeper than the current financial crisis, and for the 3.7 million people living in Puerto Rico, it is part of the fabric of everyday life.

I am not an expert on politics or global affairs, but I think that, as someone who has given much thought to the Puerto Rico’s status question, based on extensive conversations with my own family living on the island, and based on the research that I have done, I have come to the conclusion that Puerto Rico, not only needs to become a state, but also that the steps are now in motion moving towards that end. Many are trying to make sense of what is going on in Puerto Rico with the historic numbers of Puerto Ricans fleeing the island, the financial crisis, and the overall sentiment of disgust for the status quo.

I believe that these are some of the signs pointing to big changes to come in Puerto Rico’s relationship with the United States. I have created this blog to track the events as they unfold, to identify the key players and to provide a front seat, if you will, for what will be one of the greatest historic events of our generation- The inclusion of Puerto Rico as the 51st state of the union.
